For years the US Government has exposed data sets which they manage such as crime, health and education. The information has been used by developers to create "Mashups" which combine data to provide valuable data visualistions. Imagine mapping a combination of average earnings and burgulary instances for example and you have a mashup.

Finally it seems the UK government are waking up to the reality that a lot of the data they have vaulted away shoul be freely and easily available via the web. A new web site has recently been launched as the gateway providing rich data sets like crime data, house price indices, school data etc for free.
