New legislation protecting the consumer from illegitimate marketing online

The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 came into force on 26 May 2008 and makes certain illegitimate online practices illegal. For example it is now illegal to

  • Ask a question on a site like yahoo answers and then answer it yourself
  • To put favourable blog posts or reviews about your businesses intended to mislead the consumer
  • Imitate a customer
  • edit Wikipedia entries under a false name or identity

Breaking the law could mean a fine of up to £5000 from Trading Standards.
