The Consumer Protection from Unfair Trading Regulations 2008 came into force on 26 May 2008 and makes certain illegitimate online practices illegal. For example it is now illegal to
- Ask a question on a site like yahoo answers and then answer it yourself
- To put favourable blog posts or reviews about your businesses intended to mislead the consumer
- Imitate a customer
- edit Wikipedia entries under a false name or identity
Breaking the law could mean a fine of up to £5000 from Trading Standards.
